DUSHANBE. May 26. “Asia-Plus” — The government of Ukraine will provide assistance to Tajikistan to fight poliomyelitis, RIA Novosti cites Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolay Azarov as saying at the opening of the government’s session.

“We will discuss an opportunity of providing humanitarian assistance to Tajikistan,” Azarov has said. “I have already discussed this issue with my Tajik colleague at the summit of heads of CIS states held last week in St. Petersburg. And Tajikistan is waiting for such assistance.”

According to Tajik Ministry of Health, a total of 470 people with polio symptoms were registered in Tajikistan as of May 24. 129 of these 470 were tested positive for wild (Indian) polio virus of type 1.

According to WHO, only 2 lethal outcomes were registered in Tajikistan from polio virus. Immunization campaign is still under way. All children under 6 years of age reported vaccinated. The third phase of the campaign is scheduled for 1-5 June this year.

Tajik Health Ministry is about to receive a regular delivery of vaccines for immunization of children and teens under 15 years of age.
