KHOROG, April 26, 2010, Asia-Plus — Repeated elections to the GBAO regional council (Majlis) took place in Khorog (constituency # 35) and the Shugnan district (constituency # 22) on April 25.
Tavakkal Ramazonov, the head of the electoral commission for the GBAO regional legislature, told Asia-Plus that only four members of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDPT) had competed for seats in these constituencies (two in each of the constituencies).
Ms. Gulghunchmo Saidarabova, the chairperson of the Shugnan department for family and women’s affairs, won elections in constituency # 22 and Abdulvohid Amonbekov, chairman of the executive committee of the PDPT organization in Khorog, won elections in constituency # 35.
The GBAO regional constituency has 61 seats and the ruling PDPT now controls 88.5 percent of seats (54) in the council. The Communist Party (CPT) won four seats and the Agrarian Party (APT) won one seat in the GBAO Majlis. Besides, two self-propelled candidates were elected to the GBAO regional legislature, Ramazonov said.
