At the National Scientific Center for the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues of the Ministry of Health of Tajikistan, one of the most complex transplantation operations was performed for the second time since the country’s independence.

As reported by the Ministry of Health of Tajikistan, this is a simultaneous transplantation of two organs — the pancreas and the kidney from a living donor to a patient.

According to the center’s specialists, such an operation is usually performed on patients with type 1 diabetes and concurrent kidney failure. Therefore, to treat both type 1 diabetes and the kidney, a simultaneous transplantation of two organs is necessary.

The director of the center, Saidmahmoud Ismoilzoda, who performed the surgery, notes that, according to recent information on the transplantation industry in Europe, only 200 such operations have been conducted worldwide.

According to him, due to the extreme complexity and high risks for the donor, such operations are most often performed in developed countries from deceased donors.

The doctor also reported that the patient’s condition is currently stable. The donor is his wife.

For the first time in Central Asia, such a transplantation was conducted in 2019 in Tajikistan.

It is worth noting that this institution conducted for the first time this month a bypass surgery between the stomach and the small intestine, as well as between the intestines of a 57-year-old patient who had been suffering from type 2 diabetes for the last 5 years.

The operation included two stages — connecting the organs using bypass. The patient is feeling stable.
