Dedicated to World Press Freedom Day, which is observed on May 3, a conference is being held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dushanbe today. The event has brought together representatives of government bodies, international organizations, journalists, and media experts.
The theme of the conference is “Shaping a Peaceful Future: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security.”
Participants are discussing key issues related to the role of independent media in modern society, as well as the challenges facing journalism in the context of digitalization and global changes.
The program also includes speeches from representatives of the OSCE, European Union, United Nations, and diplomatic missions, as well as thematic sessions and panel discussions.
The focus is on the experiences of OSCE region countries, the impact of artificial intelligence on media, disinformation issues, journalist safety, and the development of the media environment in Tajikistan.
In the afternoon, round tables are scheduled where participants will discuss practical aspects of media work: professional ethics, legal protection for journalists, media literacy, access to information, and the development of digital skills.
The organizers note that the conference serves as a platform for open dialogue and the development of solutions aimed at strengthening freedom of speech and enhancing the resilience of the media sector.
World Press Freedom Day is celebrated annually on May 3rd. It was established by the UN General Assembly in 1993 at the initiative of UNESCO and is linked to the Windhoek Declaration of 1991, which enshrined the principles of independent and pluralistic journalism.
This day is meant to remind us of the importance of freedom of expression, the need to protect journalists, and support independent media worldwide.
