TALCO top managers, engineering personnel give up their monthly wages for construction of Roghun HPP

Date:

DUSHANBE, November 17, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Top managers and the engineering personnel of Tajik Aluminum Company (TALCO), which runs Tajik aluminum smelter, have decided to give up their monthly wages for construction of the Roghun hydroelectric power plant (HPP)  before the end of this year, Sayohat Qodirova, a spokeswoman for TALCO, said in an interview with Asia-Plus.

According to her, the decision was made at an enlarged meeting of the TALCO administration that was held yesterday.  “All employees of TALCO have expressed wish to purchase shares in the Roghun station that will be put into circulation at the beginning of the next year,” Qodirova said.

She added that TALCO was currently developing a business plan for 2010 and under that plan, the company would transfer a certain amount from its incomes to help construction of the Roghun HPP.

We will recall that Dushanbe Mayor Mahmadsaid Ubaidulloyev noted in late April 2008 that the government could raise about $10 million for the Roghun construction if all residents of Dushanbe were to give up half their wages in May and June.  He appealed on all companies to transfer 50 percent of employees” salaries to help Roghun”s construction.

The Roghun HPP, started in Soviet times but never finished, is key to Tajikistan”s goal to become a significant regional electricity exporter and raise aluminum production.
