DUSHANBE, September 18, 2009, Asia-Plus — President Emomali Rahmon today congratulated the peoples of Tajikistan on the upcoming Idi Fitr (Eid ul-Fitr).
This year, Idi Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting, is marked in Tajikistan on September 21.
In his message of congratulations, the president, in particular, noted that due to national independence of Tajikistan all necessary conditions have been created in the country for freedom of religion and Idi Fitr and Idi Qurbon (Eid u-Adha) are now celebrated in Tajikistan along with other national holidays.
Over centuries, embodying unity of society, Idi Fitr has been precondition for strengthening of friendship and brotherhood, mutual respect and genuineness, sympathy and mercy, unity of the people, the president noted.
Rahmon expressed confidence that each honest person will remember lessons of humanity of glorious ancestors and take efforts to ensure eternal peace and stability in the country, national unity and prosperity of the Homeland.
The president noted that the overwhelming majority of Muslims in Tajikistan are followers of the Hanafi school of jurisprudence within Sunni Islam.
“The Hanafi mazhab plays a special role in history of civilization and culture of our country as well as in spiritual life of our people. The main reason for the wide spread of the doctrine of Abu Hanifa is the fact that it meets requirements of life of society and people, traditions and social ties, being a legal foundation for solving many vital social and economic problems in accordance with folk custom,” Rahmon said.
Rahmon also called on well-to-do people to support orphaned children and vulnerable people as well as called on the peoples of Tajikistan to refrain from unnecessary expenses during the holiday and act within the framework of the law on traditions and rituals.
