DUSHANBE, August 20, 2009, Asia-Plus — In January-July 2009, officers from the Drug Control Agency (DCA) under the President of Tajikistan have seized more than 504 kilograms of narcotics, according to the DCA press service.
A totaled included 204 kilograms of heroin, 87 kilograms of raw opium and 213 kilograms of cannabis narcotics.
Over the report period, the counternarcotics agency has burned 1,791 kilograms of narcotics, including 150 kilograms of heroin, 408 kilograms of raw opium and 1,231 kilograms of cannabis.
DCA has instituted 77 criminal proceedings for drug related charges in January-July this year; 74 of these proceedings instituted against 84 persons have already moved to courts.
Over the same seven-month period, Tajik counternarcotics agency jointly with special services of the CIS states and Afghanistan has carried out 16 operations that led to the seizure of 712.879 kilograms of narcotics.
4,836 hectares of poppy plantations and eight heroin labs have been destroyed in Afghanistan over the report period due to information from the DCA liaison officers’ network in Afghanistan.
We will recall that Tajik law-enforcement authorities have seized 3,151 kilograms of narcotics in the first seven months of 2009.
