KHOROG, May 20, 2009, Asia-Plus — Because of torrential rain and snowfalls all the main highways in Gorno Badakhshan have been closed for traffic, according to Pomirnaqliyot (GBAO state transportation enterprise).

The source at Pomirnaqliyot said that torrential rain on the night of March 19-20 caused a number of mudslides in the Shugnan district and the roads Khorog-Dushanbe, Khorog-Ishkashim and Khorog-Osh were closed for traffic.

“Torrential rain on May 19 caused a number of mudslides near the villages of Nishusp and Gozhak that blocked in some sections the roads from Khorog to Ishkashim and Dushanbe,” he said.

Besides, snowfalls hit the Kutezak area on the highway from Khorog to the Kyrgyz city of Osh and Kashgar in China.  “All the main roads linking Khorog to Dushanbe, Kyrgyzstan and China as well as well as the road from Khorog to Ishkashim are currently closed for traffic,” the source said, noting that the enterprise specialists are currently clearing the roads of snow and slurry.

No damage or injured was reported, according to the GBAO emergency management agency.
