DUSHANBE, January 9, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Speaking to reporters in Dushanbe on January 8, Safar Mahmadiyev, head of the economic policy and forecasting department within the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), said that Tajikistan intends to bring grain productions up to 1 million tons this year.

According to him, wheat produced in Tajikistan last year met 52.3 percent of the country’s annual requirements in wheat, which was 6.3 percent more than in 2007.

The MoA official noted that last year, Tajik farmers produced 943,000 of cereals, including 760,000 tons of wheat.  “We expect the grain harvest to be good this year due to increase in areas under winter crops (170,000 hectares) and increase in the interim sowing volumes (160,000 ha),” Mahmadiyev said.

The current Tajikistan’s annual requirements in wheat are 1.26 million tons, the MoA official noted.
