DUSHANBE, December 21, 2011, Asia-Plus  — General Khalid Shameem Wynne, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee of Pakistan, is arriving in Tajikistan today evening on a three-day official visit, according to the Ministry of Defense (MoD) of Tajikistan.

During his stay in Tajikistan, the Pakistani flag officer will hold talks with Tajik Defense Minister Sherali Khairulloyev and some other high-ranking Tajik state officials to discuss issues related to military and military-technical cooperation between Tajikistan and Pakistan as well as training of military personnel for Tajik national army at Pakistani military schools, the source at a MoD said.

General Khalid Shameem Wynne is also scheduled to visit a number of military units here and meet with Tajik officers and soldiers.             

Pakistani general’s visit to Tajikistan is expected to result in signing of a number of cooperation documents between the two countries.

According to the Tajik Ministry of Defense, military and technical cooperation between Tajikistan and Pakistan began in 2009 and it has reportedly been expanding since that time.    

According to Wikipedia, General Khalid Shameem Wynne, (born 28 August 1953), is a four-star general in the Pakistan Army and the current and 14th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.  The official statement noted that “Gen. Wynne was appointed as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee by President Asif Ali Zardari, on the advice of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.”  

Before this appointment, Wynne was reportedly serving as the Chief of General Staff (CGS) at General Headquarters since April 2010.  He also served as Commander of the Southern Command (formerly the XII Corps) in Quetta from 2007 till 2010 overseeing the Baloch insurgency and the fallout of the war in the Tribal Areas.
