DUSHANBE, December 10, 2008, Asia-Plus  — Seminar formally titled “Intersectoral Dialogue on Water Resources Management” has opened in Dushanbe today morning.

Organized by the Central Asian Regional Environment Center and its branch in Tajikistan, the meeting has brought together representatives of relevant ministries and organizations as well as research and nongovernmental organizations and experts from Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan and other stakeholders to discuss issues related to development of sustainable management of water resources in the region.

The goal of the seminar is to establish a national working group, which will assess the needs for improvement of transboundary rivers management, identify pilot territories and develop project concepts.  The national working group will include representatives of the ministries, scientific and non-governmental organizations, economists and environmental experts.

This seminar is the third event arranged within the framework of this project in the Central Asian region.  National seminars have already been held in Almaty and Bishkek (September-October 2008).

The project is implemented by the Central Asian Regional Environment Center within the framework of the Central Asian Initiative for Sustainable Development with support of the Delegation of European Commission.  The purpose of the project is to establish intersectoral working groups to address relevant issues associated with preservation and use of water resources of small transboundary rivers of the region.
