Tajikistan reaches 62.5 percent of 2008 cotton target

DUSHANBE, December 3, 2008, Asia-Plus  — The country’s cotton growers are taking measures to gather remaining cotton, Muhammadi Ormonov, the head of the grains and industrial crops department within the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), said in an interview with Asia-Plus.

According to him, the majority of 33 cotton-growing districts are continuing the cotton-harvesting campaign, gathering 30 to 250 tons of raw cotton per day.  Over the past week alone, Tajik cotton farmers have yielded 1,575 tons of cotton, which is 0.3 percent of the national target, which has been determined at 552,200 tons of cotton.      

Ormonov said that cotton growers in the Khatlon province have yielded 234,273 tons of raw cotton by December 3, which is 70.6 percent of the target.  Their target is 331,000 tons of cotton.

The Sughd province has pledged to produce 172,100 tons of raw cotton.  The province has produced 87,690 tons of a valuable textile raw material to this year, which 51 percent of the target.

Districts subordinate to the center (RRPs), including Hissor, Shahrinav, Tursunzoda and Vahdat, have gathered 23,554 tons of cotton by Wednesday, which is 48.6 percent of the target determined at 48,500 tons of cotton, the MoA official said. 

The republic has yielded 345,518 tons of cotton by December 3, which comprises 62.5 per cent of this year”s target.
