KHUJAND, October 24, 2012 Asia-Plus — Forty cases of suicide among teenagers have been reported in the northern Sughd province since the beginning of this year, an official source at the Interior Ministry’s office in Sughd province told Asia-Plus in an interview.
According to him, the most recent suicide case among teenagers occurred in the Jabborrasoulov district on October 23. The 8th grade student from the Gulkhona Jamoat, K.A., was found hanged in a sheepfold. “No signs of violent death were found on his body; an investigation into the case is under way,” the source said.
In all, three suicide cases have been reported in the province over the past three days. A 30-year-old resident of the Ghoziyon jamoat in the Bobojonghafurov district committed suicide on October 21 and a 40-year-old woman from the Shahriston district hanged herself on October 22. Prosecutors have launched investigation into these cases, the source noted.
222 suicide cases, including 73 suicide attempts, have been registered in northern Tajikistan since the beginning of this year, which is 34 cases more than last year.
Men, including fourteen minors, have reportedly committed suicide in 118 cases and women, including 26 minors, have committed suicide in 104 cases.
It is to be noted that the authorities in northern Tajikistan set up a special group to try to stem an increase in the number of suicides in the area.
