DUSAHNBE, September 27, Asia-Plus – U.S. Ambassador to Tajikistan Tracey Ann Jacobson today met with Rustam Nazarov, the director of Tajikistan’s Drug Control Agency (DCA).

According to the DCA press service, in the course of the talks Nazarov briefed Jacobson on the present drug situation in Tajikistan, Afghanistan and other neighboring countries as well as measures taken by the country’s government to curb drug trafficking and cooperation between officers from the Tajik counternarcotics agency and their colleagues from other countries. 

For her part, Jacobson noted that the U.S. Government attaches a significant importance to the issue of fighting drug trafficking in the region, especially in Tajikistan, and appreciated activity of Tajik law enforcement agencies in fighting drug trafficking, according to the source.  She said that for the purpose of expanding cooperation and interaction between the two countries in fighting drug trafficking two officers from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) at the U.S. Justice Department will be deployed in Tajikistan next year.

  During her visit to the DCA the U.S. ambassador also attended a process of burning of drugs, which have been confiscated in Tajikistan since the beginning of this year.  The DCA officers burned 255 kilograms of drugs today.  The totaled included 233 kilograms of heroin and 22 kilograms of marijuana.
