DUSHANBE, October 4, Asia-Plus – Negotiations on Tajikistan’s admission to the World Trade Organization started in Geneva today, the Ministry of State Revenues and Tax Collections (MSRTC) said.

A source in the MSRTC said the negotiations will last till October 10.  According to him, the third session of a working group for Tajikistan’s admission to WTO will be held there on October 6.

“Admission to WTO is of important significance for Tajikistan to more efficiently participate in the world trade in order to achieve sustainable economic growth and strengthen its export potentials,” the source noted.

Tajikistan lodged an application for the WTO admission in 2001.  Since that time, an active work has been carried out on involving governments of donor countries, international organizations and institutions in a process of the country’s admission to this Organization.   The governments of the United States and Switzerland were among the first to support Tajikistan.  The working group for Tajikistan’s admission to WTO has to date held two meetings.
