DUSHANBE, December 14, Asia-Plus — A series of training for Tajik customs officers ended in Dushanbe on December 13.

Akram Rustamov, deputy chief of Tajik Customs Service, said that the training seminars were conducted as part of the Reforms and Modernization of Customs Services of Tajikistan Project implemented within the framework of the European Commission Action Program for Central Asia.

According to him, the main objective of the project is to promote development of efficient, professional and transparent work of Tajikistan’s customs service in compliance with international standards.  He added that this will allow reaching an acceptable balance on fiscal functions, as well as protecting society against illegal activity and developing trade in the region.

Rustamov noted that a total cost of the project that was launched in January 2006 is 800,000 euros.  The project has assisted the country’s customs service in projecting and implementing the program to reform the customs system and train personnel.

The project has been executed by Eurocustoms.
