DUSHANBE, March 13, Asia-Plus — To grant amnesty to former militants convicted on charges of having committed grave crimes would be at least unfair, Mouso Asozoda, the head of office of the Central Executive Committee of ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDPT), said in an interview with Asia-Plus, commenting on the proposal by Hoji Akbar Turajonzoda to grant full amnesty to former militants.
“Tajikistan has already announced a series of amnesties, under which some former participants of the civil conflict of 1992-1997 have been released,” said Asozoda, “At present only those are still serving their sentences in jails, who were convicted on charged of having committed especially grave crimes.” “One can imagine what reaction of those, who suffered from those militants, will be on such amnesty.”
Asozoda noted that this issue should be considered at the legislative level. As far as the issue of dropping and eliminating criminal proceedings instituted again the former UTO leaders is concerned, he noted that this proposal will scarcely be seconded.
