KHUJAND, June 21, Asia-Plus — A regional court in the Sughd province has sentenced two officers of Tajikistan’s national bureau of Interpol (international police organization) to long jail terms for corruption.

The Sughd regional court on June 20 ruled that two officers of Tajikistan’s nation bureau of Interpol Fayzullo Soliyev and Shahobiddin Ahmadov be given jail terms of 6½ and 5½ years respectively and that they should serve their terms in a high-security penal colony.

Judge Mavluda Qalandarova, who took in the trial, told Asia-Plus that the sentence had followed their conviction on charges of abuse of office and fraud.

Soliyev and Ahmadov will also be barred from holding law enforcement office for five years.

We will recall that Soliyev and Ahmadov were arrested in the Sughd on December 4 on corruption charges.

“That time, resident of the Zafarobod district Saidahmad Hasanov applied to the anticorruption department of the Sughd regional prosecutor’s office saying that the officers of Interpol demand $10,000 from him for dropping his criminal case.” The judge said.

The two officers were detained red-handed when they were accepting jewelry and a $1,000 bribe from Saidahmad Hasanov, according to Qalandarova.
