DUSHANBE, September 25, Asia-Plus — Sabir International Company, Iran’s largest civil contractor, will implement the second and third phase of the project aiming at constructing the road the Shagon-Zighar, 35 kilometers in length, Ismonqul Shoqulov, director of the unit for implementation of this project, said in an interview with Asia-Plus.

According to him, the first phase of the project included the construction of five kilometers of this road.

Sabir International, which constructed the Anzob tunnel in Tajikistan, was granted a contract to implement the second and third phases of the project after it won a tender that was held in late August, the project implementation unit (PIT) director said. A total cost of the project for implementing the second and third phases is some $32 million, with 87 percent of that amount provided by the Islamic Development Bank and 13 percent provided by the Tajik government.

The project is expected to be finished in three years after signing of appropriate documents between the Tajik Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) and Iran’s Sabir International, according to Shoqulov.  The documents are supposed to be signed this week.

The PIT director noted that as Sabir International had earlier been engaged in construction of the Anzob tunnel in Tajikistan it would not take a lot of time for transferring the necessary construction equipment to the site for the Shagon-Zighar road, which is a section of a highway that will link Tajikistan to the Karakorum Highway (KKH), which is the highest paved international in the world.

KKH connects China and Pakistan across the Karakorum mountain range, through Khujerab Pas, at an altitude of 4,877 meters.  It connects China’s Xinjiang region with Pakistan’s Northern Areas and also serves as popular tourist attraction.

Sabir International has implemented numerous projects since it was founded in 1966.  It has skilled personnel  and construction equipment to execute a large variety of projects in dam and hydropower, tunneling, water and sewage networks and treatment plant, irrigation and drainage, drilling and grouting, cutoff -wall and general civil works.
