DUSHANBE, January 18, Asia-Plus  – The present water inflow in the Vakhsh River is enough to ensure that the first of four units of the Sangtuda-1 hydroelectric power station (HPS), which is scheduled to be launched on January20, operates in full capacity, according to the Ministry of Energy and Industries (MoEI).

The source at a MoEI said that the rated capacity of each of four units of the Sangtuda-1 plant is 167 megawatt.

The first unit of the Sangtuda-1 plant will have a planned capacity of generating 220 million kWh per year, and once all four units are completed, the station will have an annual projected capacity of 2.7 billion kWh of electricity.

“In the meantime, the rate capacity of the Bayapaza hydropower plant, which located little upper than the Sangtuda-1 station, is 600 megawatt,” the source said, adding that all four units of the Baypaza station operate regularly.

Specialists from the Tajik state energy company Barqi Tojik said that the water inflow in the Vakhsh River is monitored since 1932.  The present water inflow  in the river is only 49 cubic meters per second, which is three times less than the usual rate during this time.

Russia’s Unified Energy Systems has spent approximately $500 million to build Sangtuda-1, and the Russian entity retains a 75 percent share in the power plant, which will generate a projected 2.7 billion kWh of electricity per annum.  The power station will have an estimated capacity of 670 MW.
