DUSHANBE, February 20, Asia-Plus  — Justice ministers from member nations of the Eurasian Economic Community (EAEC) have gathered in Almaty, Kazakhstan for the tenth session of the EAEC council of justice ministers, Asia-Plus has learned at Ministry of Justice (MoJ).

The source at a MoJ said the meeting is discussing a progress of implementation of resolutions adopted at the previous session of the council.    The meeting participants are also considering a draft report on the results of work carried out by the EAEC council of justice ministers in 2006-2007 and draft plan of actions for 2008-2009.

The meeting participants are also scheduled to visit a “single-window” processing center established in Almaty’s Bostandyr district and children’s penal colony.

The initial concept of the Eurasian Economic Community was first proposed in October 2000, as a successor to the CIS Customs Union, when Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan signed a treaty on broad economic and trade cooperation.  The organization was formally created with the ratification of that treaty in May 2001.  The initial five-member group was further expanded in May 2002, when Moldova and Ukraine were granted observer status, and again in April 2003, when Ukraine and Armenia gained observer status.  In 2006, Uzbekistan joined the organization.
