DUSHANBE, February 21, Asia-Plus  — The first bulk of humanitarian aid provided by the Islamic Republic of Iran is expected to arrive in Dushanbe tomorrow, Asia-Plus has learned at the Dushanbe Office of Iran’s Imam Khomeini Relief Committee (IKRC) .

An official with the IKRC Dushanbe Office said that the bulk includes 36 tons of foodstuffs worth 120,000 somonis.

According to the IKRC Dushanbe office, this assistance, including 20 tons of wheat flour, six tons of vegetable oil, five tons of macaroni and five tons of sugar, is intended for the population of Gorno Badakhshan

In the meantime, the Iranian Embassy in Dushanbe said that a consignment of warm clothes and blankets provided by Iran’s Red Crescent Society would arrive in Tajikistan within the next few days.  Besides, Iran’s Ministry of Energy has provided a bulk of fuel that will arrive in Tajikistan in the near future.

This humanitarian aid is provided in reply to the UN flash appeal for Tajikistan.  The United Nations appealed on February 18, on behalf of the Government of Tajikistan, for nearly $25.1 million to meet urgent humanitarian needs arising from the most severe winter in 25 years and to avoid foreseeable life-threatening situations during spring and early summer.
