DUSHANBE, February 25, Asia-Plus  — To improve power supply situation in Tajikistan it is necessary to tighten the energy saving regime, Shodi Shabdolov, member of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) also leader of the Communist Party (CPT), said in an interview with Asia-Plus.

According to him, the energy saving law authored by him was adopted four years ago already.  “However, the law has not worked properly for unknown reasons,” said MP.  “As a result of this, commercial losses in Tajikistan’s electricity are considerable, and the country annually loses a large volume of electrical power and Barqi Tojik power holding incurs serious losses.”

Another reason for the ongoing energy crisis in the country is low quality of transformers and other equipment installed at sub-stations, which become unserviceable very quickly, Shabdolov said.

“Besides, the reservoir powering the Norak hydroelectric power station HPS has become seriously silted, and therefore, the Norak HPS, which accounts for some 80 percent of the total volume of electrical power generated in the country, cannot work in full capacity,” MP said.  , noting  that relevant structures have never dredged the reservoir.

“Energy security is one of the most important conditions of security and independence of Tajikistan,” said the CPT leader, “The ongoing energy crisis has caused dissatisfaction of the population and the government has been forced to appeal for help to other countries and international organizations.”
