 DUSHANBE, March 3, Asia-Plus  — Russia’s open joint-stock company Federal Hydrogenerating Company (GidroOGK) will rehabilitate small hydropower plant on the Kofarnihon River in Vahdat free of charge, information posted on company’s official website said.    

The project for rehabilitation of the Small Hydropower Plan named after 10th Anniversary of Tajikistan’s Independence will be run by the Novaya Energia (New Energy) Fund, which is operator of GidroOGK’s small hydropower development programs.

A 550 kW plant was constructed on the Kofarnihon River in the district of Vahdat in 1962.  It was suspended in 1990.   

The estimated budget for rehabilitation of the station 16 million Russian rubles (RR), and the rehabilitation work is expected to be finished in 2009.  

This charitable project is aimed at promoting development of small hydropower in Tajikistan.  According to GidroOGK, it is the pilot project, and among perspective projects for construction and rehabilitation of small power plants in Tajikistan are three small hydropower plants – Nourbakhsh, Qiziltumshuk and Kuibishev – totaling 7.5 megawatts.
