DUSHANBE, April 14, Asia-Plus – Six children have died of pneumonia in Gorno Badakhshan this year, the Khorog news agency Pamir Media quoted Ms. Gulnora Zoirbekova, a specialist with the GBAO health directorate, as saying.

According to her, four children in the Ishkashim district and two others in the Murgab district died of pneumonia in early April.  “Low temperatures in classes in March and sharp warming of weather in early April as well as lowering of children’s immunity following poor nutrition have caused an outbreak of acute respiratory infections in the region,” Zoirbekova said.

In the meantime, specialists with the regional health center said that the outbreak of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) had also been registered in Shugnan’s Porshnev jamoat.  500 people, mainly children and teenagers, have contracted ARIs in Porshnev.

In all, 14,600 people in the region have contracted ARIs since the beginning of this year, according to official data provided by the GBAO health directorate.
