KHUJAND, April 26, Asia-Plus — 117.6 kilograms of drugs have been intercepted in the Sughd province over the first three months, Fayzullo Abdulloyev, the director of the Sughd counternarcotics directorate, announced at a press conference in Khujand on April 25.
According to him, the totaled included 26.3 kilograms of heroin, 68.1 kilograms of raw opium and 22.9 kilograms of cannabis.
78 drug-related crimes have been detected in the province over the report period. During the same period, 7 criminal groups, totaling 23 persons, were exposed in northern Tajikistan and more than 30 kilograms of drugs were confiscated from them.
Speaking to reporters, the Sughd counternarcotics directorate chief noted that the number of drug users is increasing in the province. In Konibodom, the number of officially registered drug users increased from 63 as of April 1, 2007 to 206 as of April 1, 2008, in Panjakent – from 153 to 328, in Isfara – from 87 to 171, in Chkalovsk – from 63 to 74 and in Spitamen – from 22 to 30, Abdulloyev said.
