DUSHANBE, June 16, Asia-Plus — A training for farmers on ways of cattle feeding was held in Hissor on Saturday, June 14.
The training is part of The Southern Tajikistan Agribusiness Supply Chains Development Project, which sponsored by International Finance Corporation (IFC).
Muhiddin Tojiyev, public relations assistant, IMF Dushanbe Office, said that the training participants had included more than 30 representatives of dairy farms, livestock experts, agronomists, as well as agriculture department heads from Hissor, Vahdat, Shahrinav, Tursunzoda, Fayzobod and Roudaki districts.
The training focused on issues related to improving productivity of milk and methods of raising productivity of forage crops.
According to the World Bank report, annual milk yields per cow are now very low in Tajikistan – 762 liters, while in Kyrgyzstan, for example, annual milk yields per cow amount to 2,142 liters.
The Southern Tajikistan Agribusiness Supply Chains Development Project helps to diversify the agricultural base in southern Tajikistan away from cotton, by working to strengthen tomato and milk supply chains in the region. The project will help local farming units improve productivity, management skills and product quality, and works with local processors to provide a market for their output. It works with farms and processors to develop contract models that provide incentives for quality, volume and timely delivery, and with local banks to develop systems of managing farm risk and mentoring farms to create a sustainable farm credit system.
