DUSHANBE, July 17, 2008, Asia-Plus  – A session of the coordination council of the CIS chief prosecutors has opened in Tbilisi, Georgia.  

Ms. Maria Gutsalo, a spokeswoman for the CIS Executive Committee, said that the CIS chief prosecutors are discussing a draft agreement on cooperation in combating trafficking in persons and human organs and a draft program for cooperation in combating human trafficking for 2008-2010.  

They will also consider issues related to countering illegal migration.  Commenting on this issue, the spokeswoman noted that as of January 1, 2008, a total population of the CIS states was 279.9 million people, including 134 million economically active people and more than 7 million unemployed.  “Many of them are leaving, also illegally, for other state seeking better employment opportunities,” said Gutsalo.  “Under such situation, cooperation in coordinating measures to counter illegal migration is becoming more and more important.”

The CIS chief prosecutors are also supposed to discuss amendments to the provisions on the coordination council and the plan of the council work for 2008-2010 and cases related to international adoption of children by foreign citizens.
