QURGHON TEPPA, July 22, 2008, Asia-Plus  — If a new mechanism of acceptance of raw cotton from farming units is not worked out, the new mechanism of funding the agrarian sector that was introduced this year will not yield expected results, the Khatlon agriculture directorate head Sadullo Beknazarov remarked at a press conference in Qurghon Teppa on July 21.

According to him, they have sent their proposals on this subject for consideration to the ministry of agriculture and the government.

“We have suggested that cotton-ginning factories should purchase cotton straight from the field camps in cash,” said Beknazarov, “If ginneries pay for raw cotton at the rate of $600 per ton, farmers will be able to defray expenses and get profit.”  Under the previous method of acceptance of raw cotton by ginneries, farmers may have problems, according to the agriculture directorate head

Beknazarov noted that the Khatlon cotton farmers now owe $300 million to their creditors.
