DUSHANBE, July 31, 2008, Asia-Plus  — Yesterday afternoon, visiting Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov visited a number of Russian facilities based in Tajikistan.  

Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, Pavel Konev, a spokesman for the Russian military base in Tajikistan, said that the minister had visited the base’s headquarters in Dushanbe, where he had got acquainted with the pace of construction of a number of social facilities, including the hospital.  He also visited the recently opened chapel and kindergarten.   

Serdyukov also visited the Lohour training ground, some 30 kilometers to the south of Dushanbe, and the space- surveillance center in Norak, the spokesman said.

 Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov arrived in Tajikistan for a working visit Tuesday evening. 

 As it had been reported earlier, Serdyukov yesterday morning held talks with his Tajik counterpart, Colonel-General Sherali Khairulloyev, and President Emomali Rahmon.  The talks focused military and military-technical cooperation between Russia and Tajikistan as well as training of military personnel for the Tajik army at Russia’s military schools.  The sides also come to an agreement on a joint use of the Ayni military airfield, some 20 kilometers to the west of Dushanbe.
