DUSHANBE, January 7, 2009, Asia-Plus  — In 2008, Tajikistan stood in the third place among the CIS states in terms of decrease in the official exchange rate of USD against national currency, according to Belarus’ private news agency BelaPan.

In Tajikistan, the exchange rate of US dollar against somoni dropped 0.38 percent in the year to December 31, 2008 – from 3.4649 somoni to 3.4519 somoni.

Moldova topped the CIS states in terms of decrease in the official exchange rate of USD against national currency.  In Moldova, the exchange rate of USD against Moldovan leu (MDL) fell 8.12 percent in the year to December 31, 2008 – from 11.3192 to 10.4002 MDL.

Moldova is followed by Azerbaijan, where the USD exchange rate against manat dropped 5.24 percent over the report period – from 0.8453 to 0.8010 manat.

In the meantime, the USD exchange rate in other CIS states increased last year, according to BelaPAn.

In Turkmenistan, the USD exchange rate increased 2.74 times in the year to December 31, 2008 – from 5,200 to 14,250 manat.  In Ukraine, the USD exchange rate rose 52.48 percent (from 5.05 to 7.70 hryvnia), in Russia – 19.69 percent (from 24.5462 to 29.3804 rubles), in Kyrgyzstan – 11.04 percent (from 35.4988 to 39.4181 som), and in Uzbekistan – 7.98 percent (from 1,290 to 1,393 sum).

In 2007, Tajikistan with 1.12 percent decrease in the USD exchange rate stood in the second place, following Uzbekistan, where the USD exchange rate dropped 4.03 percent in the year to December 31, 2007, BelaPan said.
