KULOB, January 27, 2009, Asia-Plus  — The supply of daily electricity to residential customers in the city of Kulob has been reduced to 2.5 hours – one hour of electricity in the morning (from 6:00am to 7:00 am) and 1.5 hours in the evening (from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm), the Kulob city electric systems head Mirali Qalandarov said in an interview with Asia-Plus.

According to him, the city now receives 42 megawatt of electricity per day, while city’s daily requirements in electricity are at least 70 megawatt.

In the meantime, the source at the Kulob regional electric systems, which operates electric networks in eight districts of Khatlon’s Kulob region, except Danghara and Kulob, said that severe electricity shortages had forced them to cut off electricity supplies to all villages.   Only district centers and some hospitals in large villages are receiving supplies as normal, the source said.
