DUSHANBE, February 11, 2009, Asia-Plus  —  On Tuesday February 10, President Emomali Rahmon met in Brussels with High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Secretary General of the European Council Mr. Javier Solana,  according to presidential press service.

The talks focused on state and prospects of further expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and the European Union and the two expressed satisfaction with the present level of cooperation between Tajikistan and the European Union in different fields.

Development of the energy power, creation of regional power market, enhancement of transportation and development of transit potential of central Asia’s states, including Tajikistan, were outlined as priorities of cooperation between the two sides, the press service noted.

In the course of the talks, President Rahmon noted that international community should pay proper attention to reconstruction of Afghanistan’s economy, creation of new jobs for its population and reduction in cultivation of plants containing narcotic drugs in Afghanistan that would promote establishment of peace and stability in the region.

Increase in support for Tajik border troops in strengthening border with Afghanistan and fighting illicit drug trafficking was also named as one main directions in cooperation between Tajikistan and the European Union, the press service said.
