DUSHANBE, February 14, 2009, Asia-Plus — A two-day seminar for heads of municipal services for managing apartment buildings from the cities of Dushanbe, Chkalovsk, Khujand, Kulob and Qurghon Teppa was launched in Dushanbe on February 13.
The main objective of the seminar that has been conducted under support the Local Governance Initiatives Program of Tajik Branch of Open Society Institute/Assistance Foundation (OSI/AF-Tajikistan) is in promoting sustainable development of the apartment building maintenance services in the cities of Tajikistan.
According to the OSI/AF-Tajikistan, the seminar participants are sharing experience in managing and maintaining apartment buildings and discussing issues related to expansion of cooperation between the municipal authorities, apartment building maintenance services and residents in properly maintaining and managing the apartment buildings.
Besides, they are considering the possibility of creating apartment holders’ cooperatives as alternative to the municipal services for management of apartment buildings, the source said.
At present, there are some 8,000 apartment buildings in the country, with more than 40 percent of them locating in Dushanbe.
The OSI/AF-Tajikistan’s Local Governance Initiatives Program has worked in the country since 2001 under support of OSI-Budapest (Hungary).
