At least 21 medersahs have suspended their activities in Chui oblast of Kyrgyzstan, the deputy governor Natalia Lyailenko said at the collegium on religion situation in the Chui oblast on Monday.

According to the deputy governor, educational institutions of the kind often observe neither sanitary nor planning standards. “The violations were revealed by joint raids of local authorities, Kyrgyz Education Ministry, State Committee on Religious Affairs and law-enforcement agencies,” Lyailenko said.

The region reportedly has 258 mosques, whereof only 194 passed official registration and 128 orthodox churches, whereof 125 are registered.

Meanwhile, in practice the Muslim Spiritual Leadership of Kyrgyzstan fails to keep the situation fully under control.
