DUSHANBE, March 19, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Compared to 1991, electricity consumption in Tajikistan in 2008 reduced by 4.5 billion kWh and power losses over past 17 years have increased by 1.1 billion kWh, according to the Ministry of Energy and Industries (MoEI).

In 1991, Tajikistan consumed more than 17 billion kWh of electrical power, while in 2008, the power consumption volumes decreased to 12.5 billion kWh.

According to the ministry, decrease in the power consumption volume is connected with decrease in production capacities.  In 1991, industrial enterprises of the country used 10.9 billion kWh of electricity, while in 2008, they used only 6.5 billion kWh of electrical power.

In the meantime, the volume of electrical power used by residential customers last year increased by 1.3 billion kWh compared to 1991.

As far as consumption of natural gas in the country is concerned, compared to 1991 the natural-gas consumption volumes last year decreased by 1.3 billion cubic meters.  In 2008, the country consumed little more than 515 million cubic meters of natural gas, while in 1991, the country consumed more than 1.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas.
