The UN Security Council should give a convincing response on the inadmissibility to ignore its decisions and requirements of the global nuclear non-proliferation regimes, Russian and Chinese foreign ministers underlined during their telephone conversation on Monday.

The conversation took place at the initiative of the Chinese side, a source at the Russian foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

Sergei Lavrov and Yang Jiechi discussed “a range of issues on the bilateral agenda as well as international problems, including the situation on the Korean Peninsula and in North East Asia following the underground nuclear test staged by North Korea on May 25 and a resolution that is being drafted by the UN Security Council in relation to this problem,” the source said.

The ministers called for “resolving the problem only by political and diplomatic means, including the resumption of the six-party negotiations as an important instrument for resolving nuclear problem of the Korean Peninsula and lifting North Korea’s legal concerns in the security sphere.”
