DUSHANBE/KHUJAND, June 23, 2009, Asia-Plus — President Emomali Rahmon today morning left for Khujand, the capital of the northern Sughd province for a six-day visit.

During his stay in Sughd, Rahmon is scheduled to inaugurate a number of new facilities and attend events dedicated to a National Unity Day, which marked on June 27.  This year, the main events to mark the National Unity Day will be held in Khujand.

Today, President Rahmon is attending an opening ceremony of the Rehabilitation Center for Cardiovascular Diseases in Khujand.  50 medical workers will work with center with a total of 30 beds.

During his stay in northern Tajikistan, the president  will also attend a ceremony of opening of the limited liability company, new ore-dressing plant at Tajik-Chinese Mining Company, in the settlement of Altyn Topkan (Qairoqqum), inaugurate new stadium and apartment building in Khujand, choikhona (teahouse) in the Bobojonghafurov district, presidential lyceum in Chkalovsk, Tajik-Iranian joint venture, Nikou Khujand (spinning mill), in Khujand, domestic service center Fayz and open-joint-company Sughdagroservice in the Spitamen district, and a number of schools in the Ghonchi district, as well as visit the site for construction of the power grid South-North.

President Rahmon’s visit to Sughd will last till June 28.

As it had been reported earlier, some 5,000 people, including professional artistes, students and schoolchildren, will participate in the theatrical show dedicated to the National Unity Day.  The show will be held in Khujand.  Known artistes from Dushanbe will also join in the show.

The General Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and National Accord in Tajikistan was signed in Moscow on June 27, 1997.

For the purposes of achieving peace and national accord in Tajikistan and overcoming the consequences of the civil war, inter-Tajik talks on national reconciliation were conducted from April 1994 to 1997 under the auspices of the United Nations.  Protocols that were agreed and signed in the course of eight rounds of talks between delegations of the Government of Tajikistan and the United Tajik Opposition (UTO), six meetings between the President of Tajikistan and the UTO leader, and also three rounds of consultations between the delegations of the sides in Almaty, Ashgabat, Bishkek, Islamabad, Kabul, Mashhad (Iran), Moscow, Tehran and Khusdeh (Afghanistan) constituted the General Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and National Accord in Tajikistan.
