DUSHANBE, July 10, 2009, Asia-Plus  — An opening ceremony of a Territorial Center in the framework of the EU-funded project “Care and Social Justice for Vulnerable People in Khatlon” has taken place in Mehnat village, Khatlon’s Khuroson district today morning.

The project is implemented by CARITAS Germany, with the partnership of the local Association “Odamiyat”.

According to the Delegation of the European Commission in Tajikistan, the main objective of the project is to improve the provision of social services for the most vulnerable population in Jomi and Khuroson districts and in the city of Qurghon Teppa.

The Territorial Center in Khuroson district will ensure the organization of home care for lonely elderly people in each jamoat of the district, support families of people with limited mobility, through provision of consultations and assistance in terms of medical care and social rights, as well as the irradiation of skills in nursing the elderly and people with chronic illnesses.

The project partners acknowledge the importance of the close cooperation and coordination with district authorities and with the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection.

Vulnerable people in Tajikistan are usually taken care of with the support of families and neighbors.  The project does not intend to take their place, but aims to provide social support and access to relevant information.
