KHUJAND, July 15, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Two marital agreements were concluded in Khujand, the capital of Sughd province on July 14, according the Khujand committee for family and women’s affairs.

One of the agreements was concluded by a newly married couple and the other one was concluded by spouses, who have been married for already one year, the source at the Khujand committee for family and women’s affairs said.

“Both families are representatives of a middle class,” the source said, “In all, four marital agreements have been concluded in the province since 1997.”  He attributes the small number of marital agreements concluded in the province to local mentality.

“Future husbands do not want to conclude marital agreement, thinking that it will protect mainly interests of wives in case of divorce,” said the source, “But it is not right, because this agreement between spouses, resolving issues pertaining to their joint and individual property during the marriage and/or after divorce, reflects interests of both sides.”
