DUSHANBE, August 4, 2009, Asia-Plus  — The first Afghan economic exhibition, entitled “Economic Development of Afghanistan,” has opened at the Kokhi Borbad State Complex in Dushanbe today morning.

Chairman of Tajikistan’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) Sharif Said and Afghan Finance Minister Omar Zakhilwal inaugurated the exhibition.

Afghan minister, in particular, noted that more than 120 Afghan companies, totaling 300 people, have participated in the exhibition.  Pointing out a positive trend of economic cooperation between the two countries, Mr. Zakhilwal noted that a two-way trade between Afghanistan and Tajikistan has increased 2.5 times in recent years.

Companies and firms from Kabul as well as Afghan provinces of Balkh, Kunduz, Kandahar, Herat, Jalalabad and Bamian have put on display their achievements in carpet weaving, jeweler’s art, production of agricultural goods and other relevant industries at the fair in Dushanbe.

Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, an entrepreneur from Kabul, Mr. Ahmad Adil, said that it was his first visit to Tajikistan and he hoped to conclude contracts on delivery of Afghan agricultural goods to Tajikistan.

A number of bilateral meetings of Tajik and Afghan businessmen are expected tot take place on sidelines of the exhibition that runs through August 6.

The exhibition is organized on an initiative of Tajik CCI and Afghanistan’s CCI and Agency for Investments with support from the governments of Tajikistan and Afghanistan.
