The holy month of Oraza (Ramadan) began for the Muslims of Turkmenistan on August 22. It is a period of fasting, prayer and spiritual purification. On the eve of Ramadan, night prayers, “tarawa namaz”, were offered in all mosques of the country. Being a symbol of unity of believers, these prayers will be offered every day throughout the month of Oraza.

Ramadan is a special time in the calendar of Islam marking the sending of Koran to Prophet Muhammad. Within 30 days, refraining from eating during daylight hours, Muslims close their soul for the dark and evil forces, trying to keep clean all their thoughts and intentions.

By tradition, Sadaqa (ritual meals) are offered during this month, rendering the Almighty a tribute of worship and gratitude. The size of the offerings is regulated by the income of each family and each of its members. “Pitre” (“Zakyatul-Fitr” or alms-tax) is a must. It is paid prior to the festive prayer. The size of Pitre is determined by the local clergy. In Turkmenistan, the size of Pitre equals one manat this year, said Rovshen Allaberdiev, Mufti of Turkmenistan.
