KHUJAND, September 26, 2009, Asia-Plus  — The irrigation season has come to an end in the northern Sughd province and they have begun filling up the reservoir powering the Qiaroqqum hydroelectric power plant (HPP) to ensure proper operation of the plant in the winter period.

According to the plant director Fayzullo Avezov, the main large pump stations supplying water to the agricultural fields have already been stopped and only several small pumps are currently working.  “Tajikistan has fulfilled its obligations on all government-to-government agreements and we have begun filling up the reservoir for generation of the electric power,” the director said.

He added that the rate of inflow of water from Toktogul reservoir was currently good – 450 cubic meter per second, while the rate of outflow of water from the Qiaroqqum reservoir was now only 400 cubic meters per second.  “Therefore, there is a probability that we will be able to fill up the reservoir to the good level,” the director said.
