DUSHANBE, November 9, 2009, Asia-Plus – Electricity disruptions that have hit Tajikistan today morning have not affected activity of the Tajik aluminum smelter significantly, the source at Tajik Aluminum Company (TALCO) told Asia-Plus Monday afternoon.

“We did not have electricity for some three hours and according to technological estimates, a three-hour disruption does not pose any serious problems for the enterprise,” said the source, “However, such a disruption may have a negative impact on the quality of the produced metal; fortunately, it did not happened today.”

According to him, serious problems could be caused to the smelter by five-hour and more power disruptions.  “If electricity is not supplied to the plant for more than five hours, the electrolysis baths may collapse,” said the source, “TALCO has more than 1,000 electrolysis baths costing some 300,000 U.S. dollars each.”  If all the electrolysis baths collapse, damage caused to the company may reach 400 million U.S. dollars, he added.
