DUSHANBE, November 14, 2009, Asia-Plus — A meeting to discuss issues related to interaction between judicial system and media was held in Dushanbe on November 13, according to the National Association of Independent Media of Tajikistan (Nansmit).

The meeting, which is part of the project, Support to Tajikistan’s Independent Media, implemented by the Nansmit under financial support of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), brought together representatives of media and judicial system to discuss topical issues of cooperation between courts and media as well as prospects of activities of judges in Tajikistan.

Speaking at the meeting, Zafar Azizov, the deputy chairman of the Supreme Court of Tajikistan, in particular, noted that one of achievements of the country’s judicial system was adoption of the Criminal-Procedural Code of Tajikistan in new edition.  “Under the new criminal-procedural code, judicial organs will consider issues related to authorization of arrest and use of preventive punishment,” said Azizov, “Now, this document is in compliance with the country’s Constitution.”

He also pointed to the necessity of raising legal awareness of the population and, media could play an important role in raising legal awareness of people.”
