DUSHANBE, December 16, 2009, Asia-Plus — This year, an annual award for human rights activists instituted by Tajikistan’s Republican Bureau on Human Rights and Rule of Law (BHR) – The Best Human Rights Activist of Year – has been given to Yusuf Salimov, the deputy chairman of the Dushanbe city court and formerly head of the department for constitutional guarantees and rights of citizens within President’s Executive Office.

The award-handover ceremony was held yesterday on sidelines of the event dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the establishment of BHR.

The BHR director Nargis Zokirova told Asia-Plus today that Yusuf Salimov was selected as prize winner by the commission comprising representatives from human rights and international organizations as well as the Human Rights Ombudsman Office of Tajikistan.

According to her, representatives of civil society and governmental organizations have been selected as recipients for the BHR Award 2009.

As it had been reported earlier, the BHR award will be handed over every year and researchers, politicians or public figures, journalists, representatives of human rights organizations, government institutions or international organizations active in Tajikistan may be selected as recipient for the BHR Award.  Recipients for the award are selected for their significant contributions in the area of protection of human rights.

The Republican Bureau on Human Right and Rule of Law of Tajikistan was established in November 1999.  It was registered with the Ministry of Justice on April 3, 2000.
