Japan assists grass-roots agricultural projects in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, March 28, 2010, Asia-Plus  — On March 26, Mr. Yoshihiro Nakayama, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe, signed grant contracts with Mr. Himatsho Ghayratov, Chairman of Tavildara District, Mr. Mirzodavlat Sabourov, Chairman of Panj District, Ms. Mohinav Odinayeva, Head of Sitorai Surkh Jamoat, Yovon District, and Ms. Tutikhon Sadullobekova, Director of Water Users Association Rossiya in Roudaki District, according to the Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe.

The irrigation project in Tavildara District and three projects for procurement of agricultural machines will be launched in Panj District, Yovon District, and Roudaki District.  The Government of Japan grants US$332,107 for agriculture projects.

In order to increase the agricultural production in the mountainous regions, the Government of Japan grants US$73,285 to Tavildara District for “The Project for Rehabilitation of Irrigation Canal in Sari Jangal Village, Tavildara Jamoat, Tavildara District”.  The project will rehabilitate 4.4km canal in order to irrigate 50 hectares of agricultural land in the mountainous and rocky landscape. 24 local people will be hired for the project implementation.  After the project implementation a variety of vegetables and fruits can be cultivated on the newly irrigated agricultural lands.

Panj District will be granted of US$85,614 for “The Project for Provision of Agricultural Equipment in Ozodagon Jamoat, Panj District”.  The Water Users’ Association (WUA) Sarmantoi, in Ozodagon Jamoat, will use the granted tractor with accessories and excavator for maintaining irrigation canals.  The WUA Sarmantoi provides fair water distribution and irrigation system, covering 160 Dehkan farms with 3,125 hectares.  Equipped with modern machineries, 706 hectares of land will be sufficiently irrigated.  Additionally, 40 hectares of land which is currently without water, will be newly irrigated.

The Government of Japan will grant US$89,202 to Sitorai Surkh Jamoat for “The Project for Preparation of Agricultural Machines in Sitorai Surkh Jamoat, Yovon District”.  Through the project eight dehkan farms in Sitorai Surkh Jamoat will be able to share two new tractors with accessories including trailers. Through using new equipments, the dehkan farms will be able to cultivate 183 hectares. The project, which aims to improve the local agricultural production, will increase the income of 2,214 vulnerable households in the area.

In Roudaki District, the Water Users’ Association (WUA) Rossiya will receive US$84,006 to procure a tractor with accessories and an excavator along with equipment for irrigation system under “The Project for Preparation of Agricultural Machines in Rossiya Jamoat, Roudaki District”.

The WUA Rossiya is established for fair water distribution for agriculture, management of irrigation system and agricultural machines, covering 500 hectares of agricultural land, 83 farms -15,153 people in Rossiya Jamoat in Roudaki District.

These projects will support development of local agricultural sector, enhancing sustainable development both in grass-roots and national level.

The Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) provides support to projects in the human security sectors at the grassroots level. The GGP is provided to local governments, NGOs, and educational and medical institutions in developing countries. The GGP has extended more than US$ 16.9 million for 250 projects in the Republic of Tajikistan since 1996.
