The International Olympic Committee has approved the qualification system developed by World Boxing for the boxing tournament at the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Under the approved system, men’s boxing competitions will feature seven weight categories: 55 kg, 60 kg, 65 kg, 70 kg, 80 kg, 90 kg, and over 90 kg. A total of 124 quota places will be allocated in the men’s division.

Women’s competitions will also include seven weight categories: 51 kg, 54 kg, 57 kg, 60 kg, 65 kg, 70 kg, and 75 kg, with another 124 quota places available.

Olympic quotas will be distributed based on athletes’ performances at the 2027 World Championships, continental qualifying tournaments, and rankings from the first and second World Qualifying Tournaments (WQT).

The system also предусматривает special quota places for the host country and universal quotas aimed at ensuring broader global representation, including countries with limited participation in the sport.

The 2028 Summer Olympics, officially known as LA28, will be held in Los Angeles from July 14 to July 30, 2028. It will be the third time the city hosts the Summer Games after 1932 and 1984, and the first Olympics in the United States since the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Meanwhile, the IOC has officially approved Astana as the host city for the 2027 Elite World Boxing Championships for men and women.

According to the official calendar of World Boxing, the tournament will be held in April 2027 and will serve as the first direct qualifying event for the Los Angeles Olympics.

A total of 44 Olympic licenses — 22 for men and 22 for women — will be awarded during the championships. For the first time, medals and Olympic quotas will be contested simultaneously at a single world championship across all seven men’s and seven women’s Olympic weight categories.
