DUSHANBE, April 10, 2010, Asia-Plus — Issues related to expansion of bilateral agricultural cooperation were a major topic of a meeting of Tajik Deputy Agriculture Minister, Sijouddin Isroilov, with a delegation of India’s Punjab, led by Mr. Charanjit Singh Atwal, deputy speaker of the 14th Lok Sabha (lower house of the Parliament of India), which took place here on April 9.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), the Indian delegation arrived in Tajikistan to discuss problems of agrarian sector, agricultural machinery supplies, agribusiness and exchange of experience.
The sides, in particular, discussed introduction and use of new technologies for land cultivation, raising the level of grain yields, etc, the source at a MoA said.
During the meeting it was noted that a draft agreement on agricultural cooperation between the two countries had been worked out; the document was submitted to the sides for consideration.
Punjab is a state in northwest India. Agriculture is the largest industry in Punjab, which is the largest single provider of wheat to India. Others major industries include the manufacture of scientific instruments, electrical goods, financial services, machine tools, textiles, sewing machines, sports goods, starch, tourism, fertilizers, bicycles, garments, and the processing of pine oil and sugar. Punjab is considered to have the best infrastructure in India
, this includes road, rail, air and river transport links that are extensive throughout the region.
