DUSHANBE, April 16, 2010, Asia-Plus  — An exchange of notes on the project for food security for vulnerable farmers in Tajikistan took place in Dushanbe on April 15, according to the MFA information department.

Tajik Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi and Mr. Yoshihiro Nakayama, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe, signed a grant agreement on providing financial support to farmers.

Under the agreement, the Government of Japan extends 2.05 million U.S. dollars for implementation of the project for food security for vulnerable farmers, the information department said.

Under the project, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will purchase tractors, harvesters and other agricultural equipment and Tajik state unitary enterprise, Tajikagrileasing, will sell or lease them to farmers.

All the proceeds will be transferred to an account opened by the Government of Tajikistan.  An accumulated income of this partner fund will go to providing further support to vulnerable farmers through purchase of new agricultural machines.

The project will cover some ten districts, primarily in Khatlon province, the MFA information department said.
